International Men's Day

International Men's Day (IMD) is an annual observance dedicated to celebrating the positive contributions of men to society, raising awareness of men's issues, and promoting gender equality. This special day aims to foster a sense of unity among men by highlighting the unique challenges they face and appreciating their roles in family, community, and nation-building. The celebration touches various important aspects, such as mental health, well-being, positive male role models, and highlighting the discrimination against men, marginalization, and gender stereotypes.

The concept of International Men's Day was first introduced by Thomas Oaster in 1992, while the event was officially launched in 1999 by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh from Trinidad and Tobago. In the Indian context, IMD is strongly relevant as the country grapples with various issues such as a disproportionately high male suicide rate, social expectations, patriarchy, and the need for gender sensitization. This day aims to create a platform for Indian men to express their emotions, redefine masculinity, and work towards gender equality and equity.

In India, International Men's Day is observed through various seminars, panel discussions, and workshops across the country that enables individuals and organizations to engage in constructive dialogues about men's issues. These events focus on men's mental health, breaking stereotypes, addressing gender biases, and appreciating the contributions of Indian men in various fields. It also encourages a public discourse on redefining masculinity and challenging the assumptions about men's roles in society. International Men's Day is celebrated on 19th November, coinciding with the birthday of Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh's father, who was an influential role model in his life.
