Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day, recognized internationally, is a celebration of love, romance and companionship. The day is centered on the exchange of tokens of affection, such as greeting cards, flowers, chocolates or small gifts between loved ones. It is not exclusive to romantic relationships and is often used as an occasion to express love and appreciation to friends and family. The day is named after Valentine, a Christian saint with a legendary association with love and romance.

Valentine's Day has been observed in India for several decades, gaining popularity during the late 20th century, mainly among young people influenced by western culture. Even though its roots are associated with a Christian saint, Valentine's Day in India has transcended religious boundaries, being observed by people of various faiths. However, it is important to mention that it is more typically celebrated in urban and metropolitan areas.

In India, Valentine's Day is celebrated similarly to western countries with gestures like exchanging gifts and going out for romantic dates. It has influenced the growth of floral and greeting card industries in India significantly during February. Schools in some areas organize special events where students are permitted to dress in civilian clothes instead of their uniform to mark the occasion. Couples also take part in church services dedicated to St. Valentine. There is no specific unique occurrence of Valentine's day in India; it is observed on February 14th, similar to international practice.
