International Dance Day

International Dance Day, a global celebration of dance, is intended to encourage participation and education in dance across the world. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) recognizes this special day, championing the relevance of dance in socio-economic and political cultures the world over. Besides promoting dance as a form of expression and communication, the observance underscores the importance of dance as a global language transcending linguistic, political, and cultural boundaries.

The day owes its origin to the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), the main partner of UNESCO for the performing arts. The date was chosen to commemorate the birth of Jean-Georges Noverre, the creator of modern ballet. For a country like India, which boasts an array of classical dances from Bharatnatyam to Kathak, International Dance Day holds special significance. It not only venerates India's rich dance heritage but also casts a spotlight on the country's evolving dance forms in contemporary and fusion genres.

International Dance Day is marked with much enthusiasm across India.
