International Nurses Day

International Nurses Day aims to celebrate the vital role that nurses play in healthcare systems worldwide. The concept of International Nurses Day can be traced back to 1953, when an official with the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare proposed the idea. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has been organising the event since 1965. For Australians, the observance of International Nurses Day is particularly significant given the vital role nurses play within their healthcare system. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, in 2020, there were almost 400,000 nurses and midwives registered in the country, which constitutes the largest healthcare profession in Australia.

International Nurses Day is observed by various activities aimed at recognising and appreciating the tireless efforts of nurses. These activities include award ceremonies for outstanding nurses and midwives, as well as events, seminars, and conferences that focus on exploring key issues affecting the nursing profession. Public health institutions, private organisations, and professional associations encourage the public to thank nurses for their services, often using social media campaigns to share stories of appreciation. International Nurses Day is observed on the 12th of May each year.
