Summer Bank Holiday (Scotland) History

Summer Bank Holiday marks the middle of Summer in Scotland. During the three-day weekend, many people take short trips or visit family and friends in different parts of the country. This day was originally intended to give bank employees the chance to participate in and attend cricket matches. The weeks surrounding this day are known as Fair Holidays. Towns and cities typically host festivals and events to mark the occasion.

Summer Bank Holiday was introduced in 1871 by the Bank Holidays Act. In 1971, the Banking and Financial Dealings Act moved this day to the last Monday in August for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. In Scotland, it continued to be observed on the first Monday in August.
