![]() St. Andrew HistorySt Andrew’s Day celebrates Saint Andrew, one of Jesus' 12 disciples. Saint Andrew was a Galilean fisherman before becoming one of Jesus' disciple. It is believed he brought the first foreigners to meet Jesus. Saint Andrew is also believed to have been the founder of the Church of Byzantium. It’s said he was the first bishop. He is the patron saint of several countries like Scotland, Russia, and Romania. St Andrew’s Day is believed to have originated during the reign of Malcolm III (1034-1093). The ritual slaughter of animals associated with Samhain (a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest) was moved to this date to ensure enough animals would survive the winter. In 2006, the Scottish Parliament passed the St. Andrew’s Day Bank Holiday Act. This recognized the day as a bank holiday. This day is celebrated annually on 30 November. Top Tweets for St. Andrew -
