International Day of Rural Women

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007, International Day of Rural Women emphasises that empowering rural women is essential for sustainable development and poverty alleviation. In New Zealand, rural women are highly involved in various aspects of farming, particularly in the dairy sector, horticulture, and viticulture. They also play significant roles in local communities, participating in voluntary work and contributing to the local economy. The day serves as a reminder for New Zealanders to appreciate the hard work of rural women and address their specific needs, which include access to education, healthcare, and equal opportunities in leadership and decision-making processes.

Observance of International Day of Rural Women in New Zealand includes various events, such as workshops, seminars, and conferences, that raise awareness of the importance of rural women's contributions and discuss ways to enhance their welfare and rights.
