Malta Republic Day History

Malta Republic Day celebrates the official amendment of Malta’s constitution and the birth of an independent Republic. The day also celebrates the first president in Malta’s history, President Anthony Mamo, who was appointed as president of the new Republic and the country’s debut in the Commonwealth of Nations. In 1964, Malta gained independence from Britain however the British Monarch remained the head of state until 1979.

Malta Republic Day is held annually on 13 December. It is one of a number of Malta’s national holidays celebrating its independence which also include Freedom Day and Independence Day.
