Independence of Lithuania from the Soviet Union, also known as Restoration of Statehood Day, celebrates the re-establishment of the State of Lithuania following 5 decades of Soviet rule. In 1940, during World War II, Lithuania lost its independence again as it was invaded by the Soviet Army. Upon occupation, Lithuania was converted from democracy into a Soviet Socialist Republic. In the late 1980s, as the Soviet Union struggled to keep its economy afloat, growing discontent was apparent in the Baltic states. Finally on 11 March 1990, the Supreme Soviet Lithuanian SSR became the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania and formally declared that it had re-established the State of Lithuania. Independence of Lithuania from the Soviet Union is celebrated annually on 11 March. Top facts about Independence of Lithuania from the Soviet Union
